Mission
Support Children with Disabilities and other special needs, through developing and provision of support services that may lead to their sustainable inclusion in education and subsequent equal participation in social developments.
Domain of Intervention
School Sponsorship and related support, assessment of special educational needs, Rehabilitation/habilitation and support to Community-Based Inclusive Developments (CBID), with a particular focus on education of children with disabilities and other Special Educational Needs.
Activities
AIEDR has designed its mission and objectives to respond to the needs of young Rwandans with disabilities that are in dire needs of support provisions in their communities and local educational settings. It is thus envisioned that with the collaboration of both local and international partners, working in the same area of intervention and interest, its mission is expected to be fully achieved to present an exemplary services for children and people with disabilities that ought to be rolled out in the Rwandan territory and the sub-region where PWDs are still predominantly marginalized:
• Reinforce the sponsorship program in collaboration with the German Ecumenical One World Group in the Valley. It is already agreed with the head teacher of Kayonza modern school, the leading secondary school with all facilities that all the sponsored children will be transferred there.
• Conduct in collaboration with Handicap International at each sector level an exhaustive identification survey of children with disabilities to map out their distribution and location. The identification will also entail educational and other needs to map out the services and resources required.
It is already agreed with the Vice Mayor in charge of social affairs, that the district will avail the existing resources, especially community health workers, educators and other resource persons.
Trainings, school and community outreach
In collaboration with local leaderships in Kayonza and Rutsiro Districts, AIEDR continues to foster students’ Inclusive Education clubs, parents of children with disabilities’ organizations and training of teachers in all its zones of operations.
In Kayonza District, AIEDR operates through 14 active parents’ groups, 16 students’ Inclusive Education clubs in basic and secondary schools, and has conducted over 7 teachers trainings in collaboration with the University of Rwanda-College of Education-School of Inclusive & Special Needs Education, as well as Humanity & Inclusion (former Handicap International).
In Rutsiro District, AIEDR operates through 61 active parents’ groups, 25 students’ Inclusive Education clubs in basic and secondary schools, and has conducted trainings of over 125 educators from 13 sectors in collaboration with Murunda hospital through Humanity & Inclusion (former Handicap International).
Collaboration
AIEDR closely collaborates with the local leaderships (MINALOC), schools and the general education sector (MINEDUC), local disability organizations (NCPD, NUDOR & UPHLS), as well as international agencies notably Humanity & Inclusion (Handicap International) to foster and facilitate all activities to support children with disabilities. These includes identification, assessment, rehabilitation, and sponsorship and other services for children required by children and youths with disabilities and other Special Educational Needs or Educational Vulnerabilities.
